Hemp tablecloth with ES monogram
Hemp tablecloth with ES monogram
A very simple antique hemp tablecloth, yet very effective, thanks to the weave of the fabric, hand-made on a loom, many years ago…
A small treasure that comes from the past of an ancient Tuscan family. It was in fact part of a perfectly preserved set, even if peasant, and it has come to us in excellent condition.
The fabric was hand-woven on a loom and the two cloths were sewn together using small, tightly packed, very strong stitches, as was the custom at the time.
It is the fabric that is very beautiful and worked and the central stitching becomes a decorative element, together with the ES monogram embroidered in red in cross stitch that is found in one corner of the tablecloth.
It is a simple and rustic object, which however lends itself to being the base for impressive settings, perhaps with coloured plates painted with beautiful patterns.
The dimensions are approximately 147 by 130 centimetres (they are two 65 cm wide sheets sewn together).
It has a hem at the two short ends, while on the long sides it does not have one as they are made from the ends of the loom-made cloths.
The fabric is supported, and will soften with washing, while retaining its beautiful, rustic character.
This tablecloth was made at the beginning of the last century and is in excellent condition.
It is recommended to machine wash on a delicate cycle, do not spin and dry away from the sun.
There may be small imperfections or signs of time. Consider the age of these objects, their past history, the time and life they have seen pass by... the signs that time has left on them are added values, small traces that remind us that they come to us from another era.
Appreciate these little blemishes and imperfections, they are beautiful and speak of the people who preserved them before us.
