There is something special about this hemp and cotton tablecloth.
It is simple, yet striking for the texture of the fabric, hand-woven on a loom many years ago.
It is a small treasure, which carries with it the past of a Tuscan family. It was in fact part of a peasant trousseau, lovingly preserved over time.
Its beauty lies in the fabric, carefully crafted, and in the central seam, a line of small, dense and resistant stitches, almost as if to seal a story.
Then, in one corner, an intimate touch: the GR monogram, embroidered in red with a delicate cross stitch.
It is a rustic object, but with a charm that transforms a simple table into something special. Just add some colorful plates, perhaps decorated with bright patterns, and you're done.
The dimensions are generous, 215x135 centimetres, obtained by joining two sheets with that stitching that becomes part of its beauty.
On the short sides it has a hem; on the long sides, however, you find the edge of the fabric unfinished, as was customary at the time.
The fabric has a firm consistency while being soft and will soften over time and with washing, while maintaining its authentic character, rich in history.
This tablecloth was created at the beginning of the last century and, despite its age, is in very good condition. To preserve it, I recommend a delicate wash in the washing machine, avoiding the spin cycle, and to let it dry away from the sun.
If you find some small imperfection or sign of time, leave it there. Every trace tells a life, a story. It is these details that remind us how precious these objects are, witnesses of another era.
Those little signs are not defects, they are the beauty of a past that reaches us, a testimony to appreciate, cherish and love.
